APPROACH
The health system in Papua New Guinea faces many challenges from infrastructure to workforce and the high burden of disease. More than 70% of the population live in remote rural areas with much of the country inaccessible by road.
PNG’s decentralised health system positions Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs) as the responsible body for management of all health services and health programs within their province. The National Department of Health holds responsibility for national policies, planning and technical support. The structure bears some similarities to the Australian structure. Most rural health services are run by Church Health Services (CHS) which fit into the government health structure.
ADI directly implements programs in a co-delivery model with the PHAs of Manus, New Ireland, Western and West New Britain Provinces.
ALIGNMENT
Aligning to the National Health Plan ensures that we work to support the goals and plans of the PHAs and don’t create parallel systems
CO-DELIVERY
All our programs are implemented through a co-delivery model working with PHAs
INTEGRATED
We see health and development as a holistic system that needs a holistic approach. We don't run parallel programs for one disease or one issue.
